being in the Peace Corps through The Butterfly Project. “This is my Peace Corps,” she realized one day.
Her calling for Africa began when she read the biography of Albert Schweitzer as a young girl and also the National Geographic photo story of Jane Goodall’s amazing research with the chimpanzees. In addition to meeting Jane Goodall many times over the past 25 years, Carole traveled to the rainforests of Borneo in 1989 to work with Birute Galdikas and her long term research with orangutans in the wild. Beyond what she had ever imagined, she returned to Africa three times in the past two years.
In the 1990’s Carole’s travel passions took her to Europe. She taught about creativity and writing to a Medical Education group and also took women on travel and writing trips to Greece and Italy. Also in her portfolio of passions is teaching people to make their lives better with breakthrough wellness choices, other ways to make money and with a deeper sense of happiness, purpose and feeling fulfilled.

Shana Greene is the founder and Executive Director of Village Volunteers an organization that has been recognized for its philosophy as a top ten international volunteer organization. Besides placing volunteers in villages, Village Volunteers works in collaboration with rural villages to support sustainable solutions to community challenges. Shana works with self-sacrificing and passionate community leaders who empower local people, rely on indigenous resources, and build upon their existing cultural and economic context.
Rather than hindering village growth by creating a dependency on the management of Western staff members, the Village Volunteers model is based on self-empowerment: all village projects are initiated, executed, and managed by locals. Shana has worked in Kenya since 1998 and has expanded to Ghana, India, and Nepal.
Shana has a passion for mentoring young people and has many opportunities through working with through the University of Washington and as a mentor for several Mary Gates Leadership Scholarship students. Also an environmental activist, Shana ran an environmental non-profit organization from 1989-1998 on San Juan Island in Washington State.
Her interests in women’s issues around the world fuels her enthusiasm for The Butterfly Project.
